The time used and the quality of the sculpt varies from person to person. If a sculptor was to do this the data would look different.
It is important to keep this in mind while looking at the gathered data.

Is it possible to scan a human with your cell phone?

This was the first attempt. The arms and the head didn’t want to work but the clothes looked fine. I also found out that the arms had to be wider apart.

Figured that the skin was too smooth and that was why the clothes worked but not anything else, so we had to do the head and the arms separately.

Painted dots on the face and right arm. Worked better but still not perfect. Figured that I could fix that when I made the low poly. I had to try to fix a lot of the texture parts in Photoshop and bake first the body and then the head. I couldn’t use the texture for the arm since it was too messed up so I just cloned skin from the head to the neck and arm and then copied the arm to his left side. Used a DSLR with a polarized filter instead of my cell phone for this one. Should have made a grid with more dots.

This is what I finally got. I will place him somewhere in my demonstration level.

So, what can I do to make this easier for myself in the future?

1. Use a DSLR camera with a polarized filter. Sometimes the cell phone just isn’t good enough and the filter takes away most of the reflections.

2. The lighting is really hard to get right. I used frosted plastic sheets in front of the lights as diffuse filters but I should probably have added more of them. The problem was the space I had. I simply couldn’t place more lights in there and still move freely around the objects.

3. If possible: Mask away as much of the BG as possible with something that is black and non-reflective. It’s really easy to get color contamination.

4. Photograph all the angles twice. It takes just a few minus extra. It will take much more time to make a second attempt later on.
